HISTORY
OF OUR CHAPTER
1960's when it all began: * Published our local guide THIS IS LONG BEACH in order to receive our charter from the US League of Women Voters. * Worked to defeat referendum to restore position of mayor. * Worked to institute moratorium on construction of 6 story buildings on Shore Road and Broadway. 1970's: * Initiated and passed referendum to change City Charter for staggered terms for City Council members. * Supported placement of teams of NYS Mental Health workers in Adult Homes, which resulted in a decrease of discharges into Long Beach. Residents were provided with programs and health services. * A number of League members were deputized by NYS Attorney General to monitor elections at polling places in Long Beach. * Worked to stop disproportionate placements of welfare recipients into deteriorated housing in Long Beach. * Urged removal of unfair water tax and supported water metering based on usage. 1980's: * Fought to preserve wetlands from development on the bay and Lido Blvd. * Stopped proposed tapping of Long Beach Aquifer for Mitchell Field use. * Worked for change of Nassau County Charter from Board of Supervisors (weighted vote) to County Legislature (one man/one vote). * Instituted Luncheon and Issues with speakers on various topics of community interest. 1990's: * Wrote and distributed informational guide for voters regarding school district elections. * Studied absentee ballot process. * Instituted Environmental Surveys at City's Annual Envirofests. * Instituted Annual Women's History Brunch jointly with the L.B. Historical Society to honor unsung heroines of Long Beach. 2000 to present: * Studied absentee ballot process at nursing and adult homes in Long Beach. * Lobbied for a change in NYS Election Law 8-407. * Our League was recipient of the N.Y. State League's Award for the greatest membership increase in NY State for 1999-2001. * Testified at NYS Assembly and Senate Hearings on Election Practices regarding the absentee ballot process. * Our actions resulted in the amending of Section 8-407 of the Election Law to mandate the attendance of election inspectors at nursing and adult homes to oversee and assist in the voting process at the facilities. * Monitored the implementation of the new law. In addition to the above, throughout the years the League has hosted countless informational meetings, candidate's forums, legislator's receptions and summer luncheons. Our League also monitors city council meetings and school board meetings. |
